Open a model file
Drag a model file onto the Insula3D window, or choose FileOpen… and pick it. Insula3D reads these formats on its own:
| Format | What Insula3D reads |
|---|---|
| OBJ | Objects and their materials from the .mtl file, textures included. The file stores no unit and no up axis, so Insula3D asks for both and shows the size the model would have. |
| 3DS | Objects and materials, textures included. Insula3D asks for the unit and the up axis. |
| FBX (binary) | Objects, layers, groups and materials. The unit and the up axis come from the file. |
| glTF, GLB | Meshes, the node hierarchy, materials and textures. |
Insula3D finds the .mtl file and the textures where the model points to them, usually beside it. Files it cannot find are listed in a Textures - not found box, and the model opens without them.
3DS files, OBJ files without groups, and glTF or GLB files from other programs carry no layers. For these, Insula3D asks for a Layer name rule, a pattern that takes the layer from each object name, and shows some of the names. With _(FL|EN)$, an object named A-101_FL goes on layer FL, and objects the rule does not match go on (no layer).
Warning:IFC is not written from a 3DS source, because 3DS keeps coordinates at single precision. glTF and GLB files with Draco or meshopt compression are not read.
FileOpen… also opens CityGML, CityJSON and CMIF files, so you can look at a delivered file again with its diagnosis.
